Canada Photo Convention 2013 in Vancouver

Back in April I flew from Toronto to Vancouver for CPC 2013. It is a wedding photography event that featured some of the finest wedding photographers in the world, some of whom are my favourites. When I first heard about the list of speakers I was blown away. I was 11th to sign up from over 250 attendees who flew from all over the world. Some of the speakers were Fer Juaristi from Mexico, Jeff Newsom, Ryan Brenizer, Jenny Jimenez, and Sam Hurd from United States, Brian Van Wyk from Canada, Nordica Photography from Canada/Sweden plus Samm Blake, Jonas Peterson and James Day from Australia. Actually Samm has recently moved to New York, so I’ll mention that little update. And there were a few other speakers over the 2-day event. Seriously check some of these out. They are very, very good at what they do and every single one of them has a different style that they are successful with. It was a long 2 days full of listening, networking and trying to take it all in. But oh so worth it. I certainly have a more defined understanding on what it takes to be a successful wedding photographer in a very fast-moving and competitive market.

I stayed 6 nights in Vancouver and it really is a beautiful city. It is surrounded by mountains and that alone makes it great. Below are a few shots of some of the group going for a bike ride in Stanley Park which is absolutely gorgeous and I walked around the city as well taking some photos.

On my final day in Vancouver, Christine Lee (a friend of fellow Torontonian Sam) gave us a tour of the city including some awesome fish tacos, great coffee and nature trail hike.

Toronto Engagement or Couples Photography Contest

Here is the nitty-gritty:

To enter this contest, all you have to do is Tweet, Google +1 or Facebook LIKE this article, and leave a comment on Facebook or on my Blog (for this post). That’s it! All names will then be written down on a piece of paper, cut with scissors and placed in a hat. My 7-month old son, Keanu, will then stick his chubby hand into the hat and select the winner. In the likelihood of him choosing more than 1 name, we will empty the hat and only put the names that he’s chosen until he’s left with just the winning entry. I don’t think he’s corrupt so this is a very fair contest – everyone has the same chance to win.

THE BIG PRIZE:

A customized, complimentary engagement/couples photography session of up to 2 hours at your preferred location in Toronto. The winner will receive a DVD of all the edited high-resolution images, with no watermarks as well as a password-protected online gallery of the images.

The prize also includes complimentary makeup application and hair styling as well as grooming (for the guys!) by Anna Karapetyan from AK Makeup.

Atlantis Pavilions Toronto Wedding Photographer – Laura + Jeremy

When you meet Laura and Jeremy you are instantly put at ease. They are a very kind, casual and fun couple. That’s how I felt the first time I met them and even more so during our Engagement session at Edwards Gardens in Toronto. Laura is particularly excitable and you can’t help but feed off that positive energy and enthusiasm. Their wedding Ceremony was held at Atlantis Pavilions in Toronto. Near the end of winter. That didn’t damper anyone’s spirits however. We braved the cold and windy weather for some portraits right by Lake Ontario and then some more near Uxbridge. The Reception was held in Sandford and featured lots of laughter, speeches, food and dancing. And speaking of dancing, everyone enjoyed the big hit of the night as Laura’s father, Peter starred in leading a Gangnam Style dance routine. It was a surprise and it was awesome! Toronto Baptism Photographer at Panagia Greek Orthodox Church – Anthony

7-month old Anthony was Baptized at the Panagia Greek Orthodox Church in Toronto on a cool, winter day. It is a beautiful Church in the West End of Toronto, close to Queen St. I had hoped that the baby would get fully dipped into the Holy Water as that would make for some great photographs. His mother, Sophie was not too fond of the idea as she worried that the little guy would start to cry but in the end he was a good little trooper and no tears were shed. I suppose I can’t have it all Here are some pictures from this Ceremony.

Toronto Wedding Photographer – Best of 2012

I had a wonderful 2012. It truly is awesome being a Toronto wedding photographer. I don’t just shoot weddings and engagements though. Maybe one day. But until then I really do enjoy shooting baptisms and family sessions. So I’m also a Toronto Baptism photographer and a Toronto family photographer. Weddings are generally full day events and are mentally and physically challenging. Baptisms and family sessions are just a couple of hours so that’s one reason that I love shooting all these events. I enjoy the challenges each bring and the variety. Each photosession is different and no matter what it is you will always have different moments captured.

Wedding photography in Toronto is very competitive and I read somewhere that it is the number 1 business that fails. I can see how easy it can seem to enter this industry and be successful. I will be entering my 3rd year in the business and it has been a learning curve with many challenges sprinkled throughout. And its never really easy. So many things can go wrong along the way. I have learned to always have a plan B and C knowing that being prepared for anything is vital in this industry. Having said that I’ve yet to avoid (knock on wood) and major disasters. Probably the worst thing that happened this year is my backup camera (Canon 5D) dying during a Toronto engagement session. Thankfully it was near the end and I had my trusty Canon 5DII with me anyways.

And of course I have to thank my clients. Wonderful, interesting and fantastic people. It has been a pleasure to work with so many good people that makes my work so much fun.

I already have more weddings booked in 2013 than I had in total for 2012 so I’m looking forward to the new year with much anticipation. It really is great being a Toronto Wedding Photographer!

David A. Balfour Park Couples Photographer in Toronto – Andrea + Matt

I received an inquiry from Andrea about doing some family photos for this couple, including their small dog, Piper. What really made this session extra special is the location they chose. David A. Balfour Park in Toronto. Near yonge/st.clair. I used to live in that area for almost 5 years and was very familiar with this park, having taken countless walks there before. Its December so most of the nice autumn colours are gone, but there were still a few patches in the park that had some green and brown and even red/pink in them. Andrea and Matt were also familiar with this park and we spent a couple of hours taking a stroll on muddy paths and stopping frequently with me proclaiming that “this spot is great for a photo” every now and then. Spending all this time with different couples is always fun in that you always see the chemistry they have with each other, and in Andrea and Matt’s case it was obvious they enjoyed being together and having some fun. Here are some of the photos we took that day.

Toronto Engagement Photographer – Edwards Gardens : Laura + Jeremy

On a chilly and overcast November day, I had the pleasure of taking engagement photos for Laura and Jeremy. We had postponed from the week before which had rain all day and a couple of other days due to bad weather. You probably can’t tell from the pictures, but it was only about 3-4 degreec C. And while I was bundled up in my winter coat, with wool hat, etc., Laura and Jeremy brought coats as well that they took off for the photos. And there were a ton of photos. Edwards Gardens, in Toronto, has a lot of great locations on its grounds. It still had a few places with brilliant autumn colours. I had an absolute blast doing my job here with this great couple. They listened to all my suggestions and happily posed in various spots around Edwards Gardens. Engagement photography is a great way for a couple to become comfortable and familiar with their wedding photographer. After spending a couple of hours with them I can honestly say they are one of the most caring, fun and down-to-earth people you can meet. I hope the photos here can tell their story and you can glimpse a little of what I said about them. I’m looking forward to photographing their wedding in February. Toronto Baptism Photographer at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in Mississauga – Nila

On a beautiful day in October I travelled to Mississauga to the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church to take pictures of a Baptism. Nila is about 4.5 months old and it was her special day. This was definitely one of the most beautiful churches I have been in. It is only 10 years old as well, although once you walk in you can’t help but exclaim “wow” as you are taken back almost a century. Along with Nila’s parents, Katie and Michael they had invited family members and friends to witness this event. Here are some pictures from this day.
